Thanks to the generous support of the Cris Collinsworth Proscan Fund, ten Xavier Jesuit Academy students made their debut at the Queen City Classic chess tournament, joining more than 500 competitors from across the region.
These ten young men earned their spots through a selection process right here at XJA. Mr. Gong led competitive matches during flex time, giving students the chance to demonstrate their skill and qualify for the event. Principal Kyle Chandler, Mr. Gong, and Mr. Anderson attended alongside the team on competition day.
Each student completed five matches, facing a different opponent every round. The experience reinforced lessons that go well beyond the board: patience, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt when every challenge looks a little different.
For XJA, chess is one more arena where our young men are learning to think deeply, compete with integrity, and grow into the leaders God intends them to be.
